What Is a Public Hospital District?

Whidbey General is a Public Hospital District. This means it was created, and is supported, by the community specifically to ensure the availability of quality health care services, close to home. As a community-driven institution, we are directly accountable to the people who live here, not to stockholders or some out-of-area corporation. Our elected board of trustees are your neighbors, who share your hopes, dreams, and concerns about the future of this community.

Because we were created as a public hospital district, instead of just a hospital, we have a broad mandate to deliver any health care service necessary to help people stay healthy. Here at Whidbey General Hospital, we have developed specific programs in direct response to the health care needs of our community. We have expanded throughout the years to include services such as Home Health Care & Hospice, Lifeline, Paramedics and Emergency Medical Services, Medical Ambulatory Care, our North Whidbey and South Whidbey Community Clinics, our Dental Clinic in Oak Harbor, our Community Health Education program, and Childbirth Education classes, just to name a few.

Our health care offerings are the most obvious benefits of having a community owned hospital. But we believe we also have a special obligation to ensure that anyone in need of health care services receives quality care-regardless of ability to pay.

What Can YOU Do?

  • Use us. You own us, so please consider using your hospital and its services when you have a health care need. We provide many services that you would find in a larger hospital located in the suburbs of a major city.
  • Get involved. There are many fun and satisfying ways in which you can get more involved with Whidbey General Hospital. Auxiliaries, guilds, and volunteer service are just some of the groups that need your help.
  • Spread the word. When you have had a good experience with our health care services, share that with your friends, relatives, and neighbors. If our services don't meet your expectations, please tell us at the same time, so we can correct the problem.
  • Educate yourself. Put together a group of your friends and call (678-7656 ex 4005 or 321-7656 ex 4005) to arrange a tour of the hospital . Call our Community Relations department (678-7656 ext 3350 or 321-7656 ex 3350) if your group needs an interesting speaker on health-related topics.

By finding out more about us, you can evaluate whether there are needs you, your family, or your neighbors have that we are not serving

The more you know about us, and the more we know about you, the better we can serve your needs. Whidbey General Hospital has always been at the core of our community's health. Despite the often chaotic nature of today's health care world, we have never lost sight of the need to work closely with the community we serve. With your help and support, we never will. The health care on Whidbey Island will always remain community owned -- the best kind there is!
