If you are not sure....call 911

It is often diffiicult for the general public or a lay person to know when to activate emergency medical services. There are hundreds of possible medical emergencies. For some situations, the need to activate the 911 system will be obvious. Other types of very serious medical emergencies may initially be easy to ignore or put off.

Our Paramedics and EMT's are professionals. As a group, on average WGH paramedics have over 15 years experience working in the field as a medic. They deal with all types of medical emergencies on a regular basis. When they arrive "on scene" they will obtain vital signs, perform an exam, ask appropriate questions and possibly run some non invasive diagnostic tests. With this added information they will  help you decide the most prudent course of action. Just because you activate the 911 system does not mean that when the ambulance arrives you have to go to the hospital against your will. The team leader on the ambulance will discuss your particular case with you and often also will consult with our Medical Program Director. Together we will formulate the best most responsible plan of action for you or your loved one.
