The Cancer Registry

The Cancer Registry is one of the fundamental components of the cancer program at Whidbey General Hospital. A Certified Cancer Registrar with 20 years of experience staffs the Cancer Registry. The registry has a computerized system designed for the collection, management and analysis of data on patients diagnosed and or treated with cancer at our facility. The data collected is available for use by the medical staff, hospital administration and other health care providers for statistical analyses, special studies, reporting requirements and program evaluations.

During the 2004 accession year, there were 201 new cases entered into the Cancer Registry. There have been 3266 cases entered into the registry since its inception in 1979. Of these, 1321 are living and under follow-up. Our successful follow-up rate is 98 percent, which is well above the minimum requirement of 90 percent, set by the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer.

In addition to collecting cancer patient data, the Cancer Registry is also responsible for reporting to the Washington State Cancer Registry, the National Cancer Data Base as well as coordinating the monthly Tumor Conferences and quarterly Multidisciplinary Cancer Committee meetings.

The Cancer Registrar is a member of both the Washington State Cancer Registrars Association (WSTRA) and the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) and is on the North Whidbey Relay for Life Committee.

For more information, Tumor Conference presentations and/or requests for data, call the Cancer Registry at 360-678-7656 ext 3360.
