Surgery

You may be surprised to learn that in 2004, over 3700 surgeries were performed at Whidbey General Hospital. What’s more, WGH’s surgeons are all board certified or board eligible in their field and most have completed fellowships in advanced areas of study.

Five Reasons (some quite small) To Have Your Surgery Performed Here

  1. Our laparoscopic surgeries (small incisions, less pain, and much faster recovery) are routinely performed for appendectomies, hysterectomies hernia repair, and gall bladder removal, as well as more advanced surgeries of the esophagus, spleen, and colon.
  2. We perform body friendly endoscopic procedures such as colonoscopies and EGDs to diagnose and treat the entire digestive system.
  3. Our arthroscopic surgery of the joints offers a less invasive surgery option, for same-day departure. We even offer PCA – patient controlled anesthesia for our post-op inpatients to help minimize discomfort.
  4. In 2003, we received a Qualis "Award of Excellence in Healthcare Quality" for our innovative and measurable improvements in Pain Care Management.
  5. Our patient satisfaction rate is consistently above average, with an overall satisfaction rate of 9.6 out of 10 for 2002.

The Surgical Services department of Whidbey General Hospital includes four operating room suites, a post anesthesia care unit, and an Ambulatory Surgery unit. Elective surgeries are scheduled between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Twenty-four hour emergency coverage is provided for after-hours and weekends. There are three Board Certified MD Anesthesiologists on staff. The anesthesiologist will meet with you prior to surgery to review your medical history, answer your questions and address any concerns you might have. They are also involved in chronic pain management, including epidural steroid injections for back pain. Multiple levels of care are provided, including ambulatory surgery for patients being discharged to home the day of surgery, outpatient surgery for patients requiring a 24 hour stay and surgery for patients that will require a stay of two or more days. We offer an autologous blood donation program for patients that are scheduled for major surgery.
