Whidbey General Hospital

Critical Care Unit

The seven-bed Critical Care Unit at Whidbey General Hospital specializes in treating people with heart attack symptoms and others whose medical or surgical conditions require close observation.

Expert Nursing Care

Nurses who work in the Critical Care Unit have had specialized training to prepare them for their unique roles. They are able to provide urgent patient care using immediately available drugs and emergency equipment.

When a patient has improved, he or she is transferred to the Medical/Surgical Unit where cardiac monitoring may be continued. Close observation of the patient's condition will continue, and families can be confident that our highest priority is their loved one's needs and comfort. Our goal is to provide the best possible care for all patients.

Monitoring of the Heart

Each Critical Care room is equipped with cardiac monitors that help nurses observe heart function and guard against emergencies. They register the patient's heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen level and other important information.

Doctor-Nurse-Patient Team

The doctors and nurses at Whidbey General encourage you to consider yourself a vital member of the health care team. Please feel free to ask any questions you might have. Ask the nurse on duty or call the hospital at 360-678-7656, ext. 1010 or 360-321-7656, ext. 1010, any time of the day or night.

Visitors

Patient visitation is based on the patient's condition and is at the discretion of the CCU nurse. Visitation is generally limited to the immediate family. Children are allowed to visit when supervised by an adult. Clergy are allowed to visit at any time with consent of the nurse. A family waiting room with a telephone for your use is also available.

Unfortunately, flowers are not permitted in the CCU due to risk of infection, but are allowed after patients are transferred to the ward.
