Breast MRI Scan and Biopsy Available on Whidbey
Our new Breast MRI scan and biopsy system is an important tool to help detect and treat breast cancer.
Thanks to fundraising conducted by the Whidbey General Hospital Foundation, a Breast MRI scan and biopsy system is serving patients at Whidbey General.
Breast MRI Scans
Breast MRI scanning is a 45-minute, noninvasive imaging technique that uses no compression, x-rays or radiation. Scans generate multiple, highly detailed digital images that a radiologist can examine on a computer.
Breast MRI is very effective at finding invasive breast cancer, imaging around breast implants, detecting the possible spread of cancer beyond the primary tumor and providing information on a tumor’s response to treatment. Breast MRI is the essential pre-surgery imaging study because it gives the most precise evaluation of the extent of the disease in the breast and surrounding tissue.
Breast MRI scanning does not replace a mammogram, ultrasound or biopsy – it is used in addition to these other procedures. The MRI image is better than mammography or ultrasound for looking at some breast lesions.
The Breast MRI scanner can identify a problem, but biopsy remains the best diagnostic tool to distinguish between benign and malignant areas.
An MRI-guided breast biopsy costs less than a surgical biopsy, can be completed in less than an hour and has few complications.
With Breast MRI scan and biopsy equipment and expertise at Whidbey General, patients no longer need to go off-island to benefit from these important diagnostic tools.
Thank You for Your Support
The Whidbey General Hospital Foundation spent 2013 educating the community about Breast MRI and raising funds for this important project.
Many thanks to all who helped Whidbey General obtain and install the new system, including Dr. Bruce Porter, a leading expert on Breast MRI, who contributed expertise, guidance and assistance. Dr. Robert Hawkins and our Diagnostic Imaging Department researched and advanced the proposal to acquire this lifesaving technology, and many local organizations, businesses and residents provided crucial financial support.
